Ships or boats?
You name it, in any way they are a very special topic that I happen to dive into a little in the near future.
My first course here at Chalmers is 'Ship eometry and hydrostatics' - part of the Naval Architecture Masters Programme. As you have gathered form previous posts I love it, and not even the fact that we have to hand in assignments can keep me from it (remember how much I loved homework?).
There is actually only one big assignment to hand in. We (in teams of 2) design a ship hull according to a body plan that we are given and the hydrostatic specifications. The goal is to come within 2% of the given specifications, that means numerous interations. Ours is a tanker. Mid-size one, existing and well afloat at sea, so besicly we only find what is already here.
While I listened carefully to Ronny explaining the Lines Drawing I imagined me modelling rowing boats for the fun of it, or A's canoe, so be prepared for something in this direction one day or the other.
In the meantime I suggest you look at this very nice site and learn about the modern rowing boat, as well as about the older ones. Very unfortunately this site is only available in German yet, but we already thought about translating it, so mybe one day we will come up with some universally-understood language contributions.
Enjoy your journey,
